The banished rulers of the Byzantine era gave the islands their name. One of Istanbul's best-preserved natural regions and attractions is the Princes' Islands (Isles). These islands became well-liked vacation spots for the wealthy people who constructed their wooden homes after the introduction of steamboats in the late Ottoman era, around the turn of the 19th century. Communities of Jews, Greeks, and Armenians made up a sizable portion of the local population. The islands are becoming a favorite vacation spot for day trips, particularly in the summer.
Approximately 7.500 people live on the Princess Islands, which have a 5,4 square kilometer area and a population that increases by 10–15 times during the summer. Aya Yorgi Church and Monastery, Ayios Dimitrios Church, Hristos Church and Monastery, and Hamidiye Mosque, all constructed by Sultan Abdulhamit II, are a few examples of historical structures.
